regulator wants to wait as the Trump administration develops a digital asset framework, Bloomberg News <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-02-11\/sec-binance-request-60-day-pause-of-lawsuit-against-exchange?sref=zNmRQ0gk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Tuesday (Feb. 11), citing a court filing by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the SEC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\">Binance<\/a> and Binance Co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/cpzhao\/?originalSubdomain=ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Changpeng Zhao<\/a> submitted a joint motion in court asking for 60 days, following the recent creation of a <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2025\/presidential-working-group-to-consider-digital-asset-regulations-and-stockpile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crypto taskforce<\/a> by SEC acting Chairman Mark Uyeda last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work of this task force may impact and facilitate the potential resolution of this case,\u201d the filing said. \u201cAccordingly, the SEC proposed a brief stay to defendants, and the defendants agreed that a stay is appropriate and in the interest of judicial economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Binance and Zhao were <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2023\/binance-will-vigorously-defend-crypto-trading-platform-from-sec-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged in 2023<\/a> during a wave of crypto enforcement activity by regulators such as the SEC under President Joe Biden\u2019s administration, which had taken much less pro-crypto approach to the industry than what the Trump White House has promised.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the company was accused of allowing its American users to trade on its international exchange, in violation of SEC regulations.<\/p><div data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Binance <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cpi-posts\/binance-settlement-turning-point-for-u-s-crypto-enforcement-sets-governance-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eventually settled charges<\/a> with two other regulators \u2014 the Justice Department and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission \u2014 with Zhao and the company agreeing to pay around $4.3 billion in penalties and Zhao stepping down as CEO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SEC\u2019s case has always been without merit and we are eager to put this behind us and to continue our focus on keeping Binance the most secure, licensed and trusted exchange in the world,\u201d a Binance spokesperson told Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>Following their proposed 60-day stay, the SEC and Binance said they would submit a joint status report, including whether a continuation of the stay is needed, the filing said.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC\u2019s Crypto Task Force went live last week, \u201cushering in a <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2025\/cryptos-green-light-sec-pledges-common-sense-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new era<\/a> for the Web3 space,\u201d as PYMNTS wrote at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SEC\u2019s pivot isn\u2019t happening in a vacuum,\u201d that report said. \u201cPressure is mounting from Congress, crypto investors, and the White House to modernize the regulatory approach to digital assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the task force\u2019s launch, the U.S. <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/regulation\/2024\/trump-crypto-ai-czar-pick-is-longtime-critic-of-regulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crypto and artificial intelligence (AI) czar<\/a>, David Sacks, said that while getting crypto legislation through Congress \u201ctakes time \u2026 it is something we could do in the next six
