href=\"https:\/\/rockhealth.com\/insights\/q1-2026-funding-overview-capital-continues-concentrating-and-four-other-market-signals\/\">released<\/a> Monday (April 6) by venture fund group <a href=\"https:\/\/rockhealth.com\/\">Rock Health<\/a>, which said the first three months of 2026 were marked by two \u201cheadline records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First, total funding reached $4 billion across 110 deals, compared to $3 billion across 122 deals in the first quarter of 2025. In addition, average deal size rose to $36.7 million, the highest average Rock Health said it\u2019s tracked in a single quarter since Q4 of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind those numbers: 59% of all capital deployed this quarter, one of the highest concentrations we\u2019ve ever seen (just a few percentage points behind Q1 2021\u2019s 62% and Q4 2021\u2019s 61%), came from 12 mega deals,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n<p>Among these deals were the $575 million Series G round by wearable-maker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoop.com\/us\/en\/?srsltid=AfmBOookS22y4ze2q6wtyCTroQwsdqP1mWnPVVO6WxKCHkqKDo39YpPs\">Whoop<\/a>, which valued the company at $10.1 billion as it considers an initial public offering (IPO).<\/p>\n<p>OpenEvidence, which has been called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/healthcare\/2026\/openevidence-raises-250-million-for-medical-insights-ai-platform\/\">\u201cChatGPT for doctors,\u201d<\/a> closed a $250 million Series D in January, its third round in under a year.<\/p><div id=\"pymnt-2688235320\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/verily.com\/\">Verily<\/a> raised $300 million for its precision health AI platform, as it transitions away from under Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/google\/2025\/alphabet-prepares-to-sell-life-sciences-unit-verily\/\">ownership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rock Health also said it was retiring its \u201cAI deal\u201d tracking analysis, as artificial intelligence (AI) has become \u201ctable stakes\u201d in how digital health startups and their tools are made and delivered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe broader market remains bullish on what AI is worth\u2014AI investment keeps climbing and frontier AI labs are raising at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openai-valued-at-852-billion-in-latest-funding-round\/\">eye-watering valuations<\/a>\u2014even as open questions about the cost of running foundation models and AI\u2019s longer-term impact on the economy linger,\u201d the report said. \u201cThat enthusiasm, and those unresolved questions, are just as present in healthcare as anywhere else\u2014but in a system this complex, the stakes of getting it right or wrong are especially high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PYMNTS explored the rise of AI in healthcare earlier this year in a conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.umich.edu\/profile\/3101\/marschall-runge\">Marschall Runge<\/a>, former CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganmedicine.org\/\">Michigan Medicine<\/a>, one of the country\u2019s top academic medical centers.<\/p>\n<p>He told PYMNTS CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/karenwebsterboston\/\">Karen Webster<\/a> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/the-medical-school-dean-who-says-ai-in-healthcare-moved-faster-than-he-ever-expected\/\">promise and the risk<\/a> of using the technology in a clinical setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI thinks broadly,\u201d he said. It can track a patient\u2019s age, medications and underlying conditions in mind simultaneously, making connections that a doctor running behind schedule and wrestling with a full caseload might miss. Runge has seen AI surface diagnostic possibilities that trained clinicians hadn\u2019t initially considered.
