measures\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu\/commission-proposes-measures-google-sharing-search-engine-data-third-parties-under-digital-markets-2026-04-16_en\">announced<\/a>\u00a0Thursday (April 16) by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/index_en\">European Commission<\/a>, the EU\u2019s competition regulator, would let other search engines see the tech giant\u2019s search data, including ranking, query, click and view data.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is to let third-party online search engines, or \u201cdata beneficiaries,\u201d optimize their search services and contest Google\u2019s position in the search market, the commission added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cData is a key input for online search and for developing new services, including AI,\u201d European Commission Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/about\/organisation\/college-commissioners\/teresa-ribera_en\">Teresa Ribera<\/a> said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAccess to this data should not be restricted in ways that could harm competition. In fast-moving markets, small changes can quickly have a big impact. We will not allow practices that risk closing markets or limiting choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the release, the proposed measures, under the EU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/tag\/digital-markets-act\/\">Digital Markets Act<\/a>\u00a0(DMA), cover issues such as the eligibility of data beneficiaries to receive search data, including that of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots that have search functions.<\/p><div id=\"pymnt-478684659\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The measures also cover the scope of the data Google must share and the \u201cmeans and frequency\u201d by which Google must share it, as well as measures to make sure personal data is anonymized, the commission added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHundreds of millions of Europeans trust Google with their most sensitive searches \u2014 including private questions about their health, family, and finances \u2014 and the Commission\u2019s proposal would force us to hand this data over to third parties, with dangerously ineffective privacy protections,\u201d Clare Kelly, Google\u2019s senior competition counsel, said in a statement to PYMNTS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe will continue to vigorously defend against this overreach, which far exceeds the DMA\u2019s original mandate and jeopardizes people\u2019s privacy and security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google also argued that it had already launched a DMA-compliant anonymized dataset for rivals to use its data and expertise to build competing search products, and that this solution was already working.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The commission says it will collect input on the proposal before imposing a final decision by July 27.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google is also reportedly dealing with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cpi-posts\/google-under-new-eu-scrutiny-over-alleged-search-ad-price-manipulation\/\">scrutiny from the commission<\/a>\u00a0into whether the company had distorted ad auction mechanisms in a manner that may have driven up costs for advertisers.
