Bites is basing its entire business on it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starbucks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/starbucks-brews-ai-powered-drink-picks-inside-chatgpt\/\">launched<\/a> a beta app in ChatGPT letting customers describe a mood or upload a photo to get drink recommendations, per a Wednesday (April 15) <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/stories\/2026\/meet-the-beta-starbucks-app-in-chatgpt-a-new-way-to-discover-your-next-favorite-drink\/\">announcement<\/a>. Type \u201c@Starbucks, I want something bright to start my morning\u201d and ChatGPT returns a personalized suggestion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers complete checkout through the Starbucks app or website, a choice the company makes deliberately given its reliance on its loyalty program, as CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/15\/starbucks-launches-beta-app-in-chatgpt-to-fuel-new-drink-discovery.html\">reported<\/a>. The discovery happens in ChatGPT. The purchase stays inside Starbucks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Caesars Pizza announced in a Thursday (April 16) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/little-caesars-launches-pizza-app-in-chatgpt-302741924.html\">press release<\/a> that it has launched its ChatGPT app across all U.S. markets and many restaurants in Canada and Mexico. Customers describe what they want, get recommendations and build an order with a conversation inside ChatGPT. According to Bites, third-party delivery platforms have charged restaurants commissions as high as 30% per order. The platform connects directly through restaurant point-of-sale systems, with in-store pricing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith ChatGPT and POS partnerships, we\u2019re removing the need for a third-party marketplace layer,\u201d Bites founder and CEO Bala Subramaniam said. \u201cRestaurants keep more of what they earn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A customer can ask for \u201cpizza near me\u201d or \u201cbreakfast in San Jose\u201d and move from discovery to checkout inside a single conversation. The company plans to announce its first point-of-sale partners at the upcoming Restaurant Leadership Conference.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>ChatGPT as a Commerce Channel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starbucks and Little Caesars are not the first to build inside ChatGPT. DoorDash <a href=\"https:\/\/about.doordash.com\/en-us\/news\/openai\">launched<\/a> a grocery shopping app inside ChatGPT in December 2025, letting customers turn a recipe into a grocery order delivered from local stores, Instacart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/instacart-app-launches-in-openai-chatgpt--first-company-to-offer-new-instant-checkout-app-experience-302635106.html\">launched<\/a> the same month, becoming the first app to offer end-to-end checkout, including payment, without leaving the ChatGPT interface.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That checkout experiment didn\u2019t last. In March, OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openai-moves-commerce-focus-to-brand-owned-chatgpt-apps\/\">scrapped<\/a> Instant Checkout after it failed to drive purchases, citing its inability to offer merchants the flexibility they needed. The company shifted its focus to product discovery, letting merchants handle their own transactions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several merchants involved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernretail.co\/technology\/what-went-wrong-with-chatgpts-instant-checkout\/\">said<\/a> the program didn\u2019t drive sales, and that they decided to let ChatGPT handle discovery while owning the transaction themselves. For example, Walmart\u2019s data showed the gap. Customers who clicked through to the retailer\u2019s website to finish a purchase converted at three times the rate of those who tried to buy inside ChatGPT directly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/20\/open-ai-agentic-shopping-etsy-shopify-walmart-amazon.html\">according to CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenAI\u2019s retreat handed the advantage back to the brands. The transaction stays with them. ChatGPT becomes the front door. What happens behind it is still theirs to control. Starbucks keeps the loyalty program. Little Caesars keeps the checkout.
