<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbi.org.in\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reserve Bank of India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RBI) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rbi.org.in\/Scripts\/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=62621\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Friday (April 24) that it was canceling the license issued to the bank, an off-shoot of Indian FinTech <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/paytm.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paytm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConsequently, Paytm Payments Bank Limited is prohibited from conducting the business of \u2018banking\u2019&#8230; with immediate effect,\u201d the regulator said in a news release. \u201cRBI will make an application for winding up of the bank before the High Court.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RBI, which is also India\u2019s central bank, said it canceled the license after finding that the \u201caffairs of the bank were conducted in a manner detrimental to the interest of the bank and its depositors,\u201d and that the \u201cgeneral character of the management of the bank is prejudicial to the interest of depositors as also the public interest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paytm Payments Bank had been ordered to stop onboarding of new clients in March of 2022 and was fined by the RBI in October 2023 for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/regulation\/2023\/rbi-fines-paytm-payments-bank-for-kyc-violations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noncompliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including violations of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/tag\/kyc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know your customer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2024, RBI essentially shuttered the business after an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/regulation\/2024\/regulator-to-shutter-paytms-bank-after-persistent-noncompliances\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">audit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uncovered \u201cpersistent noncompliances\u201d and \u201csupervisory concerns.\u201d This meant the bank was forbidden from taking<\/span> deposits, permitting credit transactions, or allowing top-ups on customer accounts, wallets, cards or prepaid instruments.<\/p><div id=\"pymnt-3411792535\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regulator added Friday that Paytm Payments Bank has enough liquidity to repay its entire deposit liability following the winding up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the RBI\u2019s order, Paytm said that its board and shareholders had approved resolutions to allow for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/paytm.com\/document\/ir\/stock-exchange-submissions\/fy2026-27\/apr\/Disclosure_Reg_30_LODR_25_Apr_2026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winding up of the bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Paytm added that it has no exposure to or material business with the bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe company wishes to assure its shareholders and investors that the winding-up of PPBL and the consequential cessation of the associate relationship are not expected to have any material impact on the business, operations, or financial condition of the company,\u201d Paytm said in a disclosure document posted to its website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe company continues to operate its businesses independently and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paytm had said earlier this year that it had enjoyed a string of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/earnings\/2026\/paytm-rebounds-from-regulatory-ruckus-with-sales-up-20percent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profitable quarters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and had begun enlisting online merchants following RBI approval to become an aggregator.
