to establish \u201cfamily accounts\u201d to help parents manage their children\u2019s access to and usage of AI chatbots; limit manipulative design features; and prohibit targeted advertising to children, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/press\/rep\/release\/cruz-schatz-curtis-schiff-introduce-new-bill-giving-parents-control-over-kids-ai-chatbot-use\/\">press release<\/a> issued Tuesday (April 28) by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile AI chatbots can support a child\u2019s learning, research and creativity, they also pose real risks to minors, including exposure to inappropriate content, language and addictive features,\u201d the release said. \u201cSome AI companies have even deployed rewards, notifications and targeted advertising to drive prolonged engagement by adolescent users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill was introduced in the Senate by Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruz.senate.gov\/\">Ted Cruz<\/a>, R-Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schatz.senate.gov\/\">Brian Schatz<\/a>, D-Hawaii, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtis.senate.gov\/\">John Curtis<\/a>, R-Utah, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schiff.senate.gov\/\">Adam Schiff<\/a>, D-Calif.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lieu.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/lieu.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/lieu_041_xml.pdf\">American Leadership in AI Act<\/a> includes provisions designed to strengthen the capacity to measure and evaluate AI; build research infrastructure and drive innovation; modernize federal AI governance, procurement and security; expand AI education and protect the workforce; and safeguard Americans and deter harmful deepfakes, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/lieu.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/reps-lieu-and-obernolte-introduce-bipartisan-bill-advance-american\">press release<\/a> issued Monday (April 27) by its sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American Leadership in AI Act brings together more than 20 bipartisan proposals to implement key recommendations from the Bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence <a href=\"https:\/\/republicans-science.house.gov\/_cache\/files\/a\/a\/aa2ee12f-8f0c-46a3-8ff8-8e4215d6a72b\/6676530F7A30F243A24E254F6858233A.ai-task-force-report-final.pdf\">report<\/a> issued last Congress,\u201d the release said. \u201cThe bill is designed to strengthen U.S. leadership in AI while promoting responsible innovation and safeguarding the public.\u201d<\/p><div Lieu<\/a>, D-Calif., and <a href=\"https:\/\/obernolte.house.gov\/about\">Jay Obernolte<\/a>, R-Calif.<\/p>\n<p>The Bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence released its report in December 2024 after being established in February 2024 to explore how Congress can support <a href=\"https:\/\/science.house.gov\/2024\/12\/house-bipartisan-task-force-on-artificial-intelligence-delivers-report\">AI innovation<\/a> while considering safeguards.
