anticipated income on their books, making them some of the first companies to quantify their refunds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Businesses began applying for their share of a $166 billion pool of reimbursements last week, following a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/legal\/2026\/supreme-court-tariff-ruling-resets-trade-investment-middle-market-firms\/\">Supreme Court decision<\/a>\u00a0that declared some of the White House tariffs illegal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOophzgDfUSaQ0rYLPYYOSiSl4aJy7RcVLaeXHjqKPqUJsvnE25EW\">Ford<\/a>\u00a0is expecting a refund of $1.3 billion, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gm.com\/\">General Motors<\/a>\u00a0anticipating that it will recover $500 million in import taxes.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbusa.com\/en\/home\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a>\u00a0also said it recorded a refund \u200bonto its books for its first quarter, Reuters added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report, these refunds have been logged for accounting purposes and helped the car companies\u2019 bottom lines. However, the automakers said it\u2019s not clear when the refunds would arrive, due to the uncertainty around the government\u2019s process for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/business\/2026\/feds-start-processing-127-billion-in-tariff-refunds-for-importers\/\">issuing payments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters added that companies seeking refunds might fall out of favor with the White House. President Donald Trump told CNBC last week that he would \u201cremember\u201d companies that chose not to seek refunds, without saying how they would benefit.<\/p><div id=\"pymnt-4080539657\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sherry House, Ford\u2019s chief financial officer, said the company had a fiduciary duty to file suit for reimbursement, \u201creally just for purposes of protecting our \u200bshareholders and getting in line to be able to receive the reimbursement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, PYMNTS Intelligence research has examined the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/economy\/2026\/from-shock-to-strategy-how-liberation-day-tariffs-reshaped-business\/\">impact of a year of tariffs<\/a>\u00a0on middle market companies, finding a clear pattern 12 months after Trump\u2019s \u201cLiberation Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA policy shock has evolved into a durable operating condition, where volatility is arguably the only constant, shaping how businesses plan, invest and manage risk,\u201d PYMNTS wrote earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAcross\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/series\/certainty-project\/\">PYMNTS Intelligence\u2019s Certainty Project<\/a>, firms spanning sectors and geographic reach informed us that tariffs, or the anticipation of tariffs, impacted day-to-day decision-making, affecting not only costs but also confidence, demand and long-term strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research found that tariffs had a \u201cbroad and persistent\u201d impact on operations, with businesses reporting ongoing supply chain issues, cost increases and reduced profitability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early on, 45% of goods firms expected to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/economy\/2026\/goods-firms-sweat-tariffs-while-services-firms-see-clearer-skies\/\">raise prices<\/a>, with just 5% planning that as a first response. Most companies wanted to first negotiate with suppliers or adjust sourcing strategies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut by September, that restraint had largely disappeared,\u201d PYMNTS added. \u201cBy August, 9 in 10 goods firms had raised prices, along with more than 7 in 10 services firms. Even so, 75% of goods firms and more than half of services firms reported margin declines. Three in 4 CFOs had raised prices, yet 58% still reported falling margins.
