href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/speech\/bowman20260501a.htm\">speech<\/a> delivered at an event hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/policy-issues\/financial-markets-financial-institutions-and-fiscal-service\/fsoc\">Financial Stability Oversight Council<\/a> in Washington, D.C., Bowman said regulators must ensure safety and soundness without hindering innovation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mythos AI model\u2019s ability to detect cyber vulnerabilities can be used for enhancing cybersecurity or for malicious purposes, Bowman said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs we learn more about this tool and others to be released in the coming weeks and months, we will continue to consider effective supervisory approaches for these and other emerging capabilities,\u201d Bowman said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman said that regulators\u2019 supervision of emerging technologies requires keeping up with new developments, coordinating efforts across government, communicating developments and risks to supervised institutions, getting feedback from industry, and regularly refining supervisory approach and response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs we work to support innovation, it is necessary to determine whether our framework is appropriate,\u201d Bowman said. \u201cHave we established reasonable and effective supervisory expectations? Are bankers comfortable discussing emerging risks and new technologies with supervisory teams? Have we successfully implemented a pro-innovation mindset that allows responsible innovation and AI adoption to occur within the banking system?\u201d<\/p><div id=\"pymnt-2807961083\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsb.org\/\">Financial Stability Board<\/a>\u2019s Standing Committee on Supervisory and Regulatory Cooperation, of which she is the chair, is working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/\">Treasury Department<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/\">Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a> (SEC) on a report that will cover sound practices for AI adoption, use and innovation. A draft is set to be released in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe implications of AI extend far beyond the banking and financial systems,\u201d Bowman said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was reported April 7 that Anthropic was allowing select partners to gain early access to Claude Mythos Preview, a model positioned for defensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cybersecurity\/2026\/feds-warn-major-banks-of-anthropic-mythos-cyber-threat\/\">cybersecurity<\/a> work, so that they could identify vulnerabilities and strengthen systems before threats can be exploited.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthropic said at the time it was also discussing the model and its \u201coffensive and defensive cyber capabilities\u201d with government officials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 10, a Treasury spokesperson told PYMNTS that Treasury Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/about\/general-information\/officials\/scott-bessent\">Scott Bessent<\/a> had convened a meeting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cybersecurity\/2026\/feds-warn-major-banks-of-anthropic-mythos-cyber-threat\/\">bank CEOs<\/a> to address development in AI.<\/p>\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>\r\n\twindow.pymntsAllowedArticleCount = 2;\r\n\twindow.pymntsPostID = 3699789;\r\n<\/script>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anthropic\u2019s Mythos highlights the speed at which artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities can advance and the need for supervisory approaches to keep pace with emerging technology, Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle W.
